This is what seems to be on the horizon, after the official decision of the African Football Confederation (CAF) to withdraw the organization of the can 2025 in Guinea.
According to Patrice Motsepe, the South African leader of the institution, “The infrastructure and equipment are not suitable or ready“, he explained to the media.
This decision, long feared by Guineans due to the political instability of Guinea in recent years, as evidenced by the recent coup d’etat which saw Colonel Doumbouya take the reins of the country, finally fell on them.
If the latter signed a decree declaring the organization of the CAN 2025 “of national and priority interest”, the efforts made for the realization of this project have not been up to the task since to date, the country does not has only one modern stadium in its capital, Conakry.
After this official announcement, the CAF executive committee met in Algiers and claims to have received demonstrations from several countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Senegal, Morocco and Algeria.
Algerian Minister of Youth and Sports Abderrezak Sebgag said to this effect: “It is time for Algeria to organize major events, we will present a good file to organize the African Cup of Nations, CAN 2025. We will prove that Algeria is capable of doing it The CAF inspection delegation was satisfied with the sports facilities for the CHAN 2022 African Nations Championship that Algeria will host next January . We will defend our candidacy until the end.”
Faced with the desire to host this tournament more than 30 years after having organized and won it, CAF President Patrice Motsepe responded favorably to this call by declaring during a press conference: “I encourage Algeria to submit its candidacy to host the CAN 2025, I want to give them the opportunity to organize this tournament, it has been a very long time since Algeria has hosted the CAN (since 1990, editor’s note). world-class infrastructure. Algeria has a history with football, of which all of Africa is proud”.
Things will become clearer in the coming weeks.
